French nouns

Bon jour

Today we are going to study male and female nouns.

In French a noun could be male or female.  There’s no rule to classify nouns as male or female for a given word.  All we can do is to practice and keep on using the French nouns to start learning whether they are male or female nouns.

Here there are some examples:

Le Livre
(The Book)

Un mouchoir
(A handkerchief)

La femme
(The woman)

Une voiture
(A car)

Nouns usually are used with adjectives.  If a noun is female, its adjective must be female too and it will end with an –e:

Un home intelligent
(An intelligent man)

Une femme intelligente
(An intelligent woman)

La voiture verte
(The green car)

Le mouchoir vert
(The green handkerchief)

That’s it.  Keep on practicing French nouns and their genre.

Au revoir
