So first, let's conjugate it:
French
English
J'ai
I have
Tu as
You (sing) have
Il/ Elle a
He/She has
Nous avons
We have
Vous avez
You (pl.) have
Ils/ Elles ont
They have
When you conjugate a verb starting with a vowel you have to contract the subject with the subject Je
Je+ étudie = J'étudie (I study)
Je+ ai = J'ai
You can use the verb avoir in the same way you use the verb to have in English:
J'ai une voiture I have a car
Elle a un frère She has a brother
The verb avoir is the main auxiliary we use to make sentences in the past participle tense and it works as have in english (with a few exceptions where we have to use être instead):
J'ai mangé I have eaten
Il a dormi He has slept
