L'adjectif

Salut!

Today we are going to start studying the French adjectives.

As in English, adjectives in French are used with the nouns to describe the subject.  We place the adjective after the noun.

Femile nouns usually are formed adding an –e to the male adjective:

Male
Female
English
Étroit
Étroite
Tight
Grand
Grande
Big
Haut
Haute
Tall
Intelligent
Intelligente
Intelligent

However, if the male adjective already ends with an –e, you don’t have to modify the female form

Male
Female
English
Jeune
Jeune
Young
Humble
Humble
Humble
Rapide
Rapide
Fast

French Adjectives must be written in a plural form, adding an s to the singular to correspond with the number of the subject

UN HOMME INTELLIGENT
AN INTELLIGENT MAN

DES HOMMES INTELLIGENT
SOME INTELLIGENT MEN

LA PETITE VOITURE
THE LITTLE CAR

LES PETITES VOITURES
THE LITTLE CARS

As it happen with the nouns, there are a few exceptions where the plural don’t end with an s

  Pero, al igual que ocurría con los sustantivos, hay algunas excepciones dependiendo de la terminación del masculino singular:

Plural ending

AL

Let’s see some examples:

Ordinal Numbers

Bonjour

Today we are going to continue studying the ordinal numbers.  In the previous lesson we have learnt the ordinal numbers in French from one to 10.

Ordinal numbers in French are formed using the cardinal numbers, just like in English.

To make an ordinal number in French, just drop the last -e and add -ième to the end.  If the cardinal number doesn't end with and -e, just add -ième.

The only exceptions are premier (first), cinquième (fifth) and neuvième (ninth):

DEUX- DEUXIÈME
(TWO-SECOND)

HUIT- HUITIÈME
(EIGHT- EIGHTH)

ONZE- ONZIÈME
(ELEVEN- ELEVENTH)

We can also write the ordinal numbers in French using an abbreviated form as we do in English.  Just add a small -er in the masculine form of the number and a small -re when abbreviated in the female form.  For the rest, just add an e:

1er (first)
2e (second)
3e (third)

Ordinal numbers (1-10)

Bonjour

Today we are going to learn the ordinal numbers in French from one to 10.
Ordinal numbers are used to show a relationship between things or to make a list.  English ordinal numbers are “first, second, third, etc.”

The number “first” in French has to agree in gender:

SINGULAR
PLURAL
MALE
PREMIER (FIRST)
PREMIERS (FIRST)
FEMALE
PREMIÈRE (FIRST)
PREMIÈRES (FIRST)

For the rest of the numbers you don’t have to agree with the genre.

QUATRIÈME
FOURTH
CINQUIÈME
FIFTH
SIXIÈME
